I second ensuring that you reset the sound.
Sometimes, I use this method for example:
volume sound 100 0
sound body_drop
@pause for 0.1
sound off
To ensure the sound actually plays, you do need to make sure you also code the volume properly. You cannot just write volume 100 0, you need to specify sound. e.g. volume sound 100 0, volume music 100 0.
