Hey, I’m trying to code a tappable story menu. here’s my code:
EXT. STORY MENU
music music_blastingbeat_nextdoor
@overlay START create from BLUEBUTTON AND overlay START shifts to 31 229 in zone 1 AND overlay START scales to 0.766 0.766 AND overlay START moves to layer 1 AND overlay START opacity 0 in 0
@overlay SKIP create from BLUEBUTTON AND overlay SKIP shifts to 31 128 in zone 1 AND overlay SKIP scales to 0.766 0.766 AND overlay SKIP moves to layer 1 AND overlay SKIP opacity 0 in 0
@overlay CHOICES create from BLUEBUTTON AND overlay CHOICES shifts to 31 23 in zone 1 AND overlay CHOICES scales to 0.766 0.766 AND overlay CHOICES moves to layer 1 AND overlay CHOICES opacity 0 in 0
@overlay CREDITS create from BLUEBUTTON AND overlay CREDITS shifts to 31 -80 in zone 1 AND overlay CREDITS scales to 0.766 0.766 AND overlay CREDITS moves to layer 1 AND overlay CREDITS opacity 0 in 0
label GAME_MENU
tappable
“START”{
goto START
}“SKIP”{
goto SKIP
}“CHOICES”{
goto CHOICES
}“CREDITS”{
goto CREDITS
}
label START
NARRATOR
Start
#write your current chapter
goto GAME_MENU
label SKIP
NARRATOR
Skip
#skip code
goto GAME_MENU
label CHOICES
NARRATOR
Test
#Choices
#write how the choices work in the story
goto GAME_MENU
label CREDITS
NARRATOR
Credits
#put the names you wanna credit
goto GAME_MENU
the problem is that the buttons don’t work in the way they should. If I tap on a button a different thing pops up or just doesn’t show anything. I’ve followed Mary D Sava’s Youtube tutorial. Can anyone plz help me with this? Thank you.
I don’t see it yet, but why do you set your opacity to 0 instead of 1?
Also, what I do is when I make a label, I do it with a new background, it can be the same, but it makes it easier to follow and the other overlays are gone each time (you don’t need them anymore in that scene). When you go back to your menu label, they re create, if you don’t remove them, there might be an error (not sure).
opacity 0 because my overlay is supposed to be transparent.
Okay, in that case it isn’t wrong.
I would recommend you to try to add after your label a background (can be the same).
I tried. But nothing works.
You want it to be transparent, or do you want it to not be on the screen at all? If you want it to be partially transparent (like see through), you still need to give it a percentage. ie.
&overlay NAME is 0.5 in 0
Would make it 50% transparent. Is that what you mean?
My overlay doesn’t have a label on it, but my background does, so it’d be the right thing to make it fully transparent, isn’t it?
I’m a little confused by what you mean, can you maybe post (or DM me if you don’t want to post it publicly) the overlay and background so I can see it?
this is my overlay.
and this is my background.

Oh, interesting! Okay, give me a few minutes, I’ll try putting your script into my writer’s portal and seeing what happens.

Okay, so I just tried it a couple different ways and did get it working! I guess I’m mostly confused by the “from BLUEBUTTON” part. Maybe it’s just a coding strategy I’m just unaware of, but how I got it working was by just uploading my button overlay four times, and giving them different names (ie. BLUE BUTTON 1, BLUE BUTTON 2, etc.). Then you just set up your initial code as:
@overlay BLUE BUTTON 1 create AND overlay BLUE BUTTON 1 shifts to 31 23 in zone 1 AND overlay BLUE BUTTON 1 scales to 0.766 0.766 AND overlay BLUE BUTTON 1 moves to layer 1 AND overlay BLUE BUTTON 1 opacity 0 in 0

well, from BLUEBUTTON is used when you want to duplicate your overlay. you can just upload one and create duplicates of it using this simple code!
Anyway, thank you. I’ll try yours.

Ah, I see! I’ve never tried it that way! It’s strange that it didn’t work, but uploading them all individually is pretty foolproof and might save you some frustration
I’m definitely going to look into that, though!

Yes, there’s plenty of ways of doing things while coding. Thank you and good luck!

OK first of all I would recommend using original overlay buttons and not duplicates since the tappable function sometimes doesn’t work with an overlay that is a duplicate…
I was experiencing this 2 times that the button which was duplicate didn’t react on tap and when I left the code as it was just uploaded the buttons - all started to work.
Second
Your label START where you will write your whole story ends up with goto GAME_MENU so after the reader will finish the story it will bring him back on the start the same goes for the SKIPP which actually ends by returning again to the menu - so reader will never be able to end the chapter
So try this instead:
label GAME_MENU
tappable
“START”{
goto START
}“SKIP”{
goto SKIP
}“CHOICES”{
goto CHOICES
}“CREDITS”{
goto CREDITS
}
###################################################
label CREDITS
NARR
Here write the credits
goto GAME_MENU
#####################################################
label CHOICES
NARR
Here write the choices
goto GAME_MENU
#####################################################
label START
NARR
Here add your story
####################################################
label SKIP
NARR
To be continued

Thank you, Though I’m not sure if it’s working or not, may be after including the whole coding i’ll find out!!
Hello,
I haven’t looked at your coding and I’m a bit too lazy to read through the comments lol but one thing I noticed is that the overlay you uploaded here is the size of a whole zone (640x1136), which can then conflict with the other tappable buttons and therefore your tappable thing won’t work properly because they are overlapping one another. Even considering just scaling it smaller, won’t fix the problem because it looks like it would still overlap each other. The overlay includes the transparent background behind it by the way and not just the visible image itself. So when you go to spot direct it, look at where those dashed lines around the overlay are. That will show you the “entire” size of that overlay and they shouldn’t be touching or on top of one another otherwise the tappable thing won’t work the way you want it to. So you likely need to cut out the excess background of it out.
Edit: Here’s your overlay without the excess transparent background:

No problem! Hopefully that’ll help too along with fixing the coding Farah pointed out.
