OPINION: Short Stories

I’m not 100% sure if someone has made a thread like this, so please inform if there is one already! :v:

Hiya!
I’ve been thinking of a short story idea, but I’m not sure what most people think about it! If you guys don’t mind spending a few minutes answering these questions, it will be highly appreciated!

1. What’s your ideal amount of episodes for a short story?
2. What’s your ideal episode length when it comes to short stories?
3. Do you have any genre preference for short stories?
4. What are some pros and cons of stories like these?
5. How often do you read short stories?

And finally, here’s a poll question:

With same plots, would you rather read a short story or an average length story?

  • I would rather read the short story.
  • I would rather read the average length story.
  • I don’t mind any.

1. What’s your ideal amount of episodes for a short story?
At least 3 to 10
2. What’s your ideal episode length when it comes to short stories?
Don’t have one. I’m fine with any length.
3. Do you have any genre preference for short stories?
Not really, I feel horror/thriller would be good tho for some reason.
4. What are some pros and cons of stories like these?
It’s a quick story to read. Most people like binge-reading a story so it can be quick for them to binge on I guess. A con might just be that it wasn’t engaging or they wanted it to be longer.
5. How often do you read short stories?
I haven’t come across a lot of short stories that interested me tbh. Maybe because the trending section is filled with stories that are 50 something episodes. I would like to read a short story tho; it can be like a breather from all the drama.

I agree that short stories aren’t as trending as the usual length stories which is why I wanted to know some opinions regarding it. Anyways, thanks for taking the time to answer! :slightly_smiling_face:

1. What’s your ideal amount of episodes for a short story?

I would say 5, seven tops

2. What’s your ideal episode length when it comes to short stories?

The same as for other stories, 12 to 25min

3. Do you have any genre preference for short stories?

No, I don’t but my preferences play on this one, I read Action/Thillers/Horrors/Mysteries, the last 3 genres work really well with short stories, Darkness Speaks from @MdSava and Wishes from @R.es.Story.

But I have read a hilarious short comedy from @theeloquentwriter - Speed Dating and another great short story from @SilverLady - Dark Star.

SoI, if the character is well developed and the plot well planned any genre call pull it off I believe

4. What are some pros and cons of stories like these?

Sometimes, they leave you want more.
Pros, I can finish them in one go, recently I have had so little time, and I forget to keep up woth my favs, so stories that I can finish in one go are lovely for me.

As much as I can, my third replay of Wishes speaks for me :see_no_evil:

As I said, they have the great advantage of being finished in one go

1. What’s your ideal amount of episodes for a short story?
For it to be a short story, I think 3-6 episodes.

2. What’s your ideal episode length when it comes to short stories?
10-15 minutes per episode.

3. Do you have any genre preference for short stories?
The best short stories I’ve read have been horror, thriller, and comedy.
Examples:

Horror
  • Shroud
  • Hit and Run
  • Dead Child
Thriller
  • The Game
  • Detenu
  • Ghostwriter
Comedy
  • Folks
  • Pregnant By My Twin’s Student’s Gang Leader Dad

I feel that romance and drama need more episodes for effective character development.

4. What are some pros and cons of stories like these?

Pros
  • Easy to binge read.
  • Easy to reread for multiple endings.
Cons
  • Harder to establish good character development.
  • For the author, less chance to trend higher due to fewer chapters = fewer overall reads.

5. How often do you read short stories?
Usually during contests.

4. What are some pros and cons of stories like these?
Pros:

  • Depending on the plot, it’s sometimes better to make it short and dynamic than dragging it out for several episodes and bore the reader
  • It can be a good way to try new things
  • They attract lazy readers

Cons:

  • You get less attached to the characters
  • The story has to be efficient

5. How often do you read short stories?
Rarely, but the few I’ve read haven’t disappointed me
