Overlay.... HELP!

Hi! I’ve never used an overlay before but I read @Dara.Amarie 's guide to using them and I think I’m understanding how to, but I have a question about something that was not covered in the guide I read.

I’m doing a scene where someone is moving and she’s packing up her room. I want to use the BOXES overlay (on episode) and I would like her to leave the frame and then come back with the boxes. I know how to make the overlay appear but how do I make it appear out of the frame and then come in at the same time as the character?

Also- my background only has one zone.

You could just do;

INT. BACKGROUND with BOXES
&overlay BOXES shifts to (somewhere out of view)

(In this spot you can put your zooms and make you character do the actions before she gets the box)

Then when your character walks in just time it at the same time.
&CHARACTER walks to spot (SPOT) in (TIME)
@overlay BOXES shifts to (SPOT) in (TIME)

When your character walks out you should zoom out to see where the box is (in the black space outside of the background) and make her do a box holding animation behind it so it can be timed better.

Okay wait I actually ended up finding a prop that works better than the overlay. How do I do the same thing but with a prop instead?

After she walks offscreen, do;

@add Moving Box to CHARACTER

Then your character will walk back with the prop in her hands.

Okay just two more things.

First, I changed everything to look right and made it so she’s doing a box holding animation, and the box is there the whole time.
Like the box is there even before I added it. It’s weird. This is my script

script

@RUE exits left
@RUE is walk_box_neutral_loop
@add Moving Box to RUE
@RUE is walk_box_neutral_loop
@RUE enters from left to screen center
@RUE is idle_box_carry_neutral_loop

And second, I want her to be doing the walk_box_neutral_loop animation as she walks back into the frame instead of just the animation it automatically uses when someone enters. How would I do that?

Maybe the box is there because it’s already been previewed (it stays on the character until it passes a line that tells it to clear).

Since you’re using a prop and not an overlay, you don’t need to do the walk_box_neutral_loop animation because it’s gonna be attached to her anyways.

When she enters, do;

@RUE enters from left to screen center and RUE is walk_box_neutral_loop

So it happens at the same time.

Oh okay I think I get that. How do I make it go away in the lines before it enters? Or is it just something that happens in the preview?

It only happens in preview so it doesn’t matter if the box is there because it won’t happen in the story. Wherever you added the box into the script is when it will show up when playing, same with when you take it out.

ok so you can do something like this

BACKGOUNDNAME
@overlay OVERLAYNAME create
coordinates (like when you put a character in screen)
@overlay OVERLAYNAME opacity (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 0.5 … 1) in (seconds)

I’m new but I think that I allready know most of the things to coding in episode so if you have any doubt you can send me a mail

now for it to move you can do something like this (this is with one of the overlays I have)

@overlay COBIJA2 shifts to -55 138 in zone 1 in 1

now for changing the size

@overlay 6477567198691328_COBIJA2 scales to 2.206 2.206

and opacity

@overlay OVERLAYNAME opacity (0-1) in (time/seconds)

and for it to happen at the same time insted of puting the @ you put &

scince I’m new in the forums it hast let me and I neded to upload it 8 hours after uploading the last one that is the one to move overlays from place to place

im doing a scene now where two people are in a car but the car is an overlay so how do i make it move forward with them?

Spot directing and “&” command;

&overlay CAR shifts to (SPOT) in (TIME)
&CHARACTER 1 walks to spot (SPOT) in (TIME)
@CHARACTER 2 walks to spot (SPOT) in (TIME)

it like when you make it move
you just need to click the prevue botton and put the car were you want it to move and select the shift part thet is the first part and in the same line you put the time

@overlay OVERLAYNAME shifts to (place) in zone (the zone) in (seconds)
