Overlay Opacity and character talking simultaneously

My code won’t work!! I’ve looked a lot of places, but nothing explains this! Can I use & on opacity or not?!?!

@overlay IVY MOUTH SPEAK to layer 35
@overlay IVY MOUTH SPEAK opacity 1 in .5
@overlay IVY MOUTH SPEAK opacity 0 in .5
@overlay IVY MOUTH SPEAK opacity 1 in .5
&overlay IVY MOUTH SPEAK opacity 0 in .5

I want the code to be at the same time as when I put the character speaking like I’ve seen other authors do, but it just won’t work, it’ll just pause and not do anything until the dialogue comes in, like 3 seconds later. Please help me with this!! Thank you!!

They need to be on the same line and you need to use the “then” command

&overlay IVY MOUTH SPEAK to layer 35 then overlay IVY MOUTH SPEAK opacity 1 in .5 then overlay IVY MOUTH SPEAK opacity 0 in .5 then overlay IVY MOUTH SPEAK opacity 1 in .5 then overlay IVY MOUTH SPEAK opacity 0 in .5

CHARACTER
Dialogue here.
