It depends on what type of story you’re reading, if you’re reading an original (made by someone in the community) you won’t get gems after reading a chapter, if you’re reading a story by episode themselves you will get them

Well I know for once that if a story has the “E” sign on it I get a gem , that’s what I was told, but in my app there’s no “E” sign in ANY of the books, and I think that’s where the problem is coming from.
Is it on the home page? If it’s the home page there should be E’s. If there isn’t on the home page it must be a glitch, try reloading the app, or submit a ticket to episode support

Hey you should file a ticket and let Episode know. They will send you them gems that you didn’t get!
