POC Problems in the episode community

Would like to read it as well!

I think the issue is that people think they have to include stereotypes when the character is anything except the generic white straight character and that shouldn’t be the case. Like how hard is it to have your character be the same person except they just happen to be a person of color? If people really wanted to add diversity they would just like how they write their scenes and art around episode guideline. Also look at the trending section there are a lot of authors who are poc and yet have all white characters. I will call them out on that, sorry.

Never did I say that it did. If I implied that, I’m sorry.

I’m so sorry for even mentioning this but I don’t think it’s politicly correct to refer to poc as “them” this may seem petty but its a form of racism. ps: I’m sure you didn’t mean to I’m just simply correcting it. :slightly_smiling_face:

I think they was referring to the LGBQT.

I was not referring to POC, I was talking about the LGBTQ+ community.

I really want to read this story!

Are we a different species that acts differently from others or something? This isn’t really something you have to research about. Adding a POC character and giving them a personality isn’t the same as representing a religion right. Please.

Never said that. I said that they are treated differently. I’m sorry if it sounds like that. Truly not what I meant.

Would it be going too far if a POC had a past of parents who were self-hating, and took a lot out on their kids, causing severe PTSD. Now, this isn’t a joke or a thing that is lightly brought up once. It is brought up mulitiple times, and shows the effect it had on the children, then and currently. It will have multiple scenes of the MC going to the therapist, and it will have no racist words used, or any physical violance. It just shows scenes of parents screaming, shouting, blaming them for everthing.

Now, I’m asking about it, because it almost seems disrespectful, and I the last thing I want is for anyone to feel offeneded, or like it is directed at them. I can take it out of the plan, because it’s still early enough, but I truly want an honest opinion.

That sounds interesting. I don’t find it disrespectful, if it will be done correctly.

Of course. I’m doing more research into what mental abuse can do, and how this could effect them. Thank you.

Here I am, showing up to the thread 15 minutes late with Starbucks.

I haven’t been on the Episode forums recently, but other online communities have similar issues. I’m white and the epitome of privilege if you want to get technical I have Native American and black ancestry a couple generations back, but physically I’m as white as printer paper) so when I was first introduced to the idea of cultural appropriation and really realizing how racism affects people today, I was very defensive. I thought that if I did or was apart of a culture that did racist things, that I was automatically a bad person. With that on top of depression, it led to some deep-seated self hatred.

To overcome this, I had to apply cognitive thinking to the situation. When I found myself reacting defensively to any POC speaking against white people or their problems, I stopped to think: is this about me as a person? The answer so far has always been no. Just because I’ve done something racist out of ignorance, it doesn’t mean I am a bad person, so long as I admit I messed up and tried to do better in the future.

Back to Episode, there’s a much younger audience of readers and authors who probably are ignorant, and I think the way of thinking I listed above would help things from escalating. As for educating them, no one’s really obligated to teach someone about why what they did was culturally insensitive, especially because it can be emotionally draining. I’ve seen threads where people volunteer to teach about their culture, and I think that’s the best first step that can be taken! Another thing could be perhaps an info hub that gives people a place to start researching, because typing something into google can be overwhelming.

I know I’m not on the receiving end of racism, but I am hopeful that communities like this can grow and do better together. :v: Gonna bounce for more starbucks lol

The idea of cultural appropriation is a lot more offensive than people embracing different cultures. How is it racist for a white girl to wear braids? When did the term “racist” get so diluted? People will bark racism to anyone doing anything.
