[POLL] Should the Google Play Store and App Store be contacted about this?

Hello everyone

Due to the not-so-recent wave of outrage in the community after the release of “It Starts With A Bra” and “…In My Bed!!!”, the numerous complaints about the inappropriate stories on top of the trending section, and more… I was wondering if we should contact the Google Play Store and the App Store about Episode being marketed to young 13 year old teenagers despite the tremendous amount of explicit content it features on the app and openly promotes since I believe it goes against both stores’ rules. Episode doesn’t seem like they’re going to change unless their community really takes action and I don’t really know what else we could do. Maybe if we contacted the Play Store and App Store, something could be done about the age rating in that case, or Episode would finally be pushed a bit more to change their ways and truly respect the guidelines for once. Should we give this more time? Would it be too much? It really disturbs me to think that young teens are on this app, reading all these nasty stories. And I really want this app changed for the better.

What do you think? Please remain respectful, it is just a suggestion and I’d really like to know what the Episode community thinks of this idea. And if you don’t think Episode has really broken any rules on the Google Play Store and App Store, respectfully let your opinion be known.

On the Google Play Store’s Restricted Content page:

  • Child Endangerment: “[…] Apps that appeal to children but contain adult themes are not allowed.”
  • Inappropriate Content > Sexually Explicit Content: “We don’t allow apps that contain or promote sexually explicit content, such as pornography. In general, we don’t allow content or services intended to be sexually gratifying.” and “Here are some examples of common violations: Depictions of sex acts or sexually suggestive poses.”

On the App Store’s Review Guidelines:

  • "1.1.4 Overtly sexual or pornographic material, defined by Webster’s Dictionary as “explicit descriptions or displays of sexual organs or activities intended to stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic or emotional feelings.”

Keep in mind that these rules are for what is allowed or not allowed to be on the stores altogether. Meaning, if they find that Episode is blatantly going against these rules, they could very well (in an extreme case) just remove the app from the stores.

This poll is anonymous. Feel free to vote, no one will know your answer unless you decide to let us know by commenting below this post.

  • We should contact the Google Play Store and the App Store.
  • We should wait for things to get worse.
  • We shouldn’t contact the Google Play Store and the App Store.

On my Google Play store (Australian) I recently noticed that the app has a Mature rating however on the Apple store (also Australian) it still has a 12+ rating.

I had a look at a few of the other similar apps and their ratings. They were all 12+ minus Chapters which is 17+ in both my stores (again, this is for Australia).

I personally don’t think that 12+ is an appropriate rating for the app right now.

Thanks for letting us know about the ratings it has in Australia! In France, Episode has an age rating of 12+ in both stores. It’s interesting to see how the ratings differ from each store and country.

I looked up Chapters and it also has a 17+ rating here, on the App Store. And a 16+ rating on the Play Store.

I would rather wait with this. They acknowledged (more or less) that ‘…In My Bed’ was a huge mistake and temporarily removed it from the app. Although I don’t think they were honest about why they published it in the first place, I would prefer to see the outcome of this before taking action.
I haven’t read ‘It Starts With A Bra’, I just figured that it must be some trash with this title and the community’s feedback confirmed that. Honestly I hoped it was not THAT bad since it’s still on the app. I think I’m gonna read it now, maybe that will change my opinion.

I understand, this kind of move deserves to be thought through. I think “…In My Bed!!!” has only been hidden but not removed completely since it’s still possible to find it on Episode’s profile on the app and on “My Favorites”, isn’t it? I can’t say that “It Starts With A Bra” was as explicit as “…In My Bed!!!”, but it definitely was inappropriate and not at all suitable for 13 year olds. If you’re really going to read it, I sincerely wish you bon courage (= french way of saying “hang in there” or “i wish you courage”)!

I never even thought of this as an option, but it’s actually quite smart. I know a lot of people, myself included, were not happy with the “satire excuse” and I think this would be a great way to hold them accountable.

Yeah, I saw they couldn’t remove the story from our Favorites shelf, fortunately I don’t have it there

Thanks for the wishes regarding ‘It Starts With a Bra’… I made it through the first 3 chapters, now I’m taking a break. This is one of the stupidest things I have ever read in my entire life.

Oh, thank you! I thought someone might as well do it. And I was kind of nervous about the response this was going to get but it seems like it’s pretty positive so far. So I’m relieved (phew). If we go through with it, I’ll probably need everyone to help and provide screenshots and links to anything that the Play Store and App Store can look at to analyze this situation. Hopefully it is effective and doesn’t get lost in their thousands of other reports. There are already a bunch of screenshots in the threads discussing “…In My Bed!!!” and “It Starts With A Bra” so I’m saving them just in case.

I’d have some serious questions for you if you did!

You’re very welcome, I know I’d need it. And I agree, I couldn’t even finish episode 1, it’s truly one of the stupidest stories out there.

Contact them… These stories are sending the wrong message to 13-year-olds.

I’m wondering when I should close the poll and contact/wait/not contact the stores. Maybe Episode will fix itself by that time lol.

#12

Yeah, I was about to ask you about the deadline
:joy:
Maybe give it a day or two? Or maybe we can wait until Episode answer us regarding our complains?

OR you can maybe do another poll where you ask about this?

#13

Haha, I’d be asking about the deadline on another pole then wonder about the deadline for that second pole :joy: So I’d make a new one and so on…

You’re right. I was thinking about waiting for them to tell us how their newest story “…In My Bed!!!” even “passed the mark” in the first place. Because apparently it went through all their reviewing process and their TOS just fine  I also don’t know if 40 votes is quite enough… We’ll see

EDIT: Hmm… It seems pretty divided between “We should contact” and “We should wait”
