Review my art ~ constructive criticism only :)

Hey, with everything going on I got some time on my hands so I thought I’d experience with art. This is my 3rd time trying to do some things. With the help of some editors’ tutorial I managed to do something, but I know that it still needs work so to the artist out here, could you review the art? I can take constructive criticism.

DISCLAIMER: the outline is a little bit sloppy, and I know some items (like the shoes and the lashes) aren’t drawn that good, sorry about that lol.

PS: it is supposed to be a doll, so I didn’t take too much time on the hair for example.

Also, I used MedibangPaintPro on my laptop, do you have any advice on how to use the app? for example, how to make straighter lines when outlining?

the hair could use some more details. I guess you only used base colour and one for shadows. I would say use at least 3 colours for details.

the clothes also don’t have any shadows.

It looks amazing! Maybe some details in the hair and the clothes? (shadows). But you’re very talented!

I’m no professional, but I recently started digital drawing too (I’ve always been more of a traditional artist). And let me say, for someone who just started out, your work is really good! But there are some things that could help improve it…

  1. You didn’t add much shading. This caused your drawing to look a little flat. To give a drawing a more realistic/3D look, you can add darker and lighter colors in certain areas. Usually you add lighter colors where there is light, and darker colors where there is none. So, pick where you want your light to come from, and make that the lightest part of the drawing. Then, the opposite side of that will be darker, and will most likely cast a shadow. There are plenty of YouTube tutorials that go a lot more in depth with this! (and explain it a little better)
Some Shading Examples

  1. Outlining can make certain parts of your drawing really stand out. From what I can tell, it looks like you outlined your drawing with a similar color to the skin tone, or maybe you didn’t even outline some parts at all. I would advise against this, but that is just my personal opinion. Without outlining (and shading), your drawing could end up looking like a giant blob of colors. So when you’re outlining, I would recommend using a darker color. This doesn’t have to be black, it could be a brown, tan, pink, blue, etc…it just depends on the drawing.

I really hoped these made sense and helped you! For someone who’s barely done this you’e REALLY good. You just struggle a little with shading and could use some outlining. So in conclusion, your drawing lacks dimension. But this can easily be fixed, and I’m still working on this too! I recommend looking at other artist’s work, this always helps me when i don’t know how to draw or color something. Remember, there is no such thing as perfect art, just make sure you enjoy making it in the process.
Sorry this was so long!

That’s a really awesome drawing!
From here on, it quite depends what style you are more leaning towards, if you want something more cartoony, try adding outlines, some fun colors & elements!
For realisms, try adding details! In the eyes, lips, nose, the face overall, and also the hair, bring out shapes with highlights and shadows!
If you need any help or tips hmu! :sparkling_heart:

It’s fine! It was really helpful!
Thank you for taking the time and leaving advice. I figured that I needed to add shadow, but I didn’t really know where to add it, but it makes sense now so thank you again :relaxed:

Thank you for the tips, I’ll definitely contact you if I need any help!
For now I don’t really know with what style I’m gonna go, but I guess it’ll come with time!

Some more shading will make her look more 3D. You can use either the smooth type od shading of more he comix style.
Also, the outlines might be darker - looking from bit distance its hard to see the hand on the leg it blends in…the darker outlines will help to make it more clear.
The hairs would look better with more detail - even a doll would have 3D hairs I think.
The pose is not much looking as a doll to me btw.

In general it is great for your 3ed try!
