May be a lil new to this but I thought it’d be fun if I decided to start things off with a review of one of my personal favorite Episode stories in recent memory; “The Enchantress” by Mette M. Peleikis
A girl gets the shock of her life when she gets pricked by a flower and suddenly possesses the ability to attract any guy who touches her. Dealing with this alongside some developing crushes on two guys and an upcoming photography contest, what is Evangeline Moore to do?
Well, from the premise alone I was curious to see how this story would stand out among other trending “love triangle” stories on the app… and surprisingly enough, it was actually among my first favorite Episode stories!
The creativity of this one magical flower causing such an attracting effect (whilst still explained relatively scientifically to not be too out of place from the realistic setting), the relatability of the main cast and how you could honestly root for both male love interests throughout this story was such a fun and refreshing take from the norm
As far as the characters go, like I said I did enjoy most of them pretty well for their assigned roles:
-Eve, our MC, is a fairly relatable protagonist in her own right; maybe not too different from the norm of Episode MCs but still fairly strong in her plights of wanting to win this photography contest whilst balancing all these crazy social situations happening around her. Only part I’ll admit was a bit “iffy” on regarding Eve was how her dynamic with Jake and her sister turned out within the love triangle (but I’ll get to that in a sec).
-Jake, one of the love interests and the childhood best friend of Eve, is another strong lead with how loyal and supportive he is of the MC even while she wasn’t exactly the “Miss Popular” she’d grow to become throughout the story thanks to the flower. A charming motive to want us to root for him potentially getting with Eve, but not without counting for his equally sweet dynamic with Eve’s sister as well (whom I’ll get to in a sec). Overall, if you’re a sucker for the classic “friends-to-lovers” trope you’ll most likely be satisfied picking him as Eve’s eventual endgame
-Kai, the other love interest and most popular guy in school, actually turned out to be a pretty pleasant surprise than what I expected for his character trope
. He’s not some preppy arrogant ass or an overly edgy bad boy, but just a genuinely sweet and thoughtful guy who’s just mixed up in some of the wrong crowds… yet when push comes to shove, grew to truly care for and relate to Eve in more ways than one
. If you’re looking for a more “unique” and heartwarming take on this type of “popular guy x outcast girl” trope, then I don’t blame anyone for picking Kai at the end for Eve
-Emma, the MC’s younger sister and a potential alternate love interest for Jake, was a sweet girl and a fun support system for Eve throughout the story (even tho it pained me never being able to afford to actually wear any of her pretty outfits 'cause no gems, sorry Ems lol
). Though may be a bit pushy at times with wanting to “fit in” with Eve’s growing social life, you can’t really blame her with how they set up Emma being someone who was born sickly and struggled with having to be “sheltered” so much. Speaking of which, her growing confidence and chemistry around Jake was surprisingly pretty fun to watch (as mentioned before), which definitely fits with those who’d prefer to go with Kai in terms of a love interest for Eve (whilst still wanting Jake to have a lil happiness for himself too).
The only real issue to be had with this arc was I kiiinda felt Eve’s eventual reaction to Jake and her sis being a thing a bit… much? Like, yeah it’d probably hurt if you’re playing the Jake love interest route but I mean… she and Jake weren’t even dating at that point so idk what it’d be worth for Eve to get fussed about it, especially since that’s her sister and not like one of those other bitchy mean girls
. But idk, maybe that’s just me.
All other characters were fairly standard in their own ways; the popular kid bullies that you wanna slap (Kiana & her crew), the dorky yet loving parents (Eve’s mom and dad), and even that one hermit dude near the story’s end was pretty sympathetic when you got to learn more of his story of being similarly cursed as Eve was.
In conclusion, I’d definitely recommend “The Enchantress” for it’s fun and relatable cast, the mystical yet still down-to-earth plot element of growing within one’s own beauty, and the generally sweet love stories to be had among either Jake or Kai’s love routes (or perhaps none at all if you wanna keep Eve single). Personally, I’m generally more of a Kai fan with how beautifully done his story with Eve turned out to be, but I can see the appeal with Jake’s as well so really, it’s all up to you which routes you wanna pick as a personal preference
