School Dress Code in High School Stories

What do you think? Do you think authors should pay attention to dress characters that go to school ‘appropriately’? Because I think they shouldn’t care. Dress code is blantantly discriminating against girls and sexist, since the boys are almost never reprimanded for what they wear. In fact, I’m writing a story where the high school girls’ wardrobe could be considered sexy. My female characters feel good about themselves and as long as it’s not indecent, I don’t see what the problem is. In my school nobody ever dared tell me that what I wore (or anyone else really) was ‘inappropriate’. If a teacher thinks a student wearing a sweater without bra or a pair of leggings is inappropriate, the problem is the teacher who notices girls’ bodies, not what the girl is wearing.

I can partly agree, but a lot of schools will say that uniforms are used to identify which students attend which school (this is especially important for school excursions and carnivals) and also to form a sense of community and perhaps even a ‘neatness’ if the school is a particularly prestigious one. At my high school we all had uniforms, but juniors and seniors wore a different color and this was to let younger grades know who they could ask for assistance or help, much like how our captains, vice-captions and prefects wore badges to identify themselves for everyone else.

As for authors, it doesn’t bother me if they choose to have their characters wear whatever they want at school or if they choose to apply school dress codes and uniforms since every school is different and so is every story. I can agree though, that it isn’t nice to shame someone for what they wear, however something very indecent must be brought to attention to deter it from happening again because it can be totally inappropriate or even offensive (in any setting, but specially an educational/school setting).

I didn’t mean school uniforms, I meant normal clothes in schools that don’t have school uniforms.

Sorry, I interpreted “dress code” with “schools” as uniforms much like dress codes for specific types/styles of clothing for work places or clubs, but after viewing the link — I think those are silly things to be punished or reprimanded for.

Tbh, idc whether or not authors abide by school dress codes or not (some highschools don’t even have a dress code). I know I’d wear crop tops and jeans ripped above the knees all the time, cause the teachers at my school didn’t really enforce the highschool dress code like that anyway.

I don’t think it matters, and I don’t think authors should get hate for it.

Edit: Same with tattoos. I know quite a few people I went to school with who are littered with tattoos. My best friend tatted a heart on my ankle in the school bathrooms (we were ghetto :sob:)

I’ve seen people talk about dress codes in highschool stories a lot but I don’t know how I feel about it. I know that wearing a crop top and mini skirt might seem a bit much but tbh when I was in highschool (I’m 21 now lol) it would have been okay. One day I literally wore a crop top and short shorts to school and nobody cared. We didn’t have a dress code. We just couldn’t wear clothing and with like offensive slogans and things.

So, I feel like the author should dress their characters how they feel comfortable. I don’t worry about it too much. Every school is different

I have nothing against school uniforms, the opposite in fact. Better wear school uniforms than getting suspended and reprimanded for, fundamentally have womanly curves that could ‘distract boys’ (which is a boy problem, not the girls’ but as usual, the girls are the ones who pay for it).

Some schools have uniforms so rich kids can’t take the ‘poorer’ kids down because of what they wear. I went to a school where a uniform was a… Polo shirt (IT WAS THE WORST THING I EVER WORE AAAH) and the printed on badge came off when my mom ironed it :joy: I think that the school uniforms are very unpractical and take away our choice to express ourselfs through our clothes :confounded:
