Showing the background and zooming into character

Hi everybody,
I am trying to figure out how to show a background and pan through it with narrator speech going on while I get to my MC.
Every time I go through it I am zoomed in too closely. I would like to be able to show the whole background then zoom in.
If anyone has any good tips I would appreciate it. I really want to learn!

reset the zoom at the beginning of the scene, then use

&pan to zone 3 in [T] THEN zoom on ### in [T]

&cut to zone 1
