I’m not in need of a cover yet (still spending centuries writing my story), but I just wanted to know how I ask for a cover, and how you ask for a specific theme and how the artist knows what the characters look like. I might sound stupid, sorry, but I’m new to writing, I’ve always just read the stories and finally I decided to start a story myself.
Would be much appreciated if someone filled me in on the basic info.

It honestly depends on the artist. Some have stricter expectations than others, so make sure you read their post : D
However, when asking for a cover, you should make sure to include info like:
The title/ author(if you want it included
Your characters’ COMPLETE descriptions (that’s how the artist know what they look like!)
The genre ( Because a thriller cover would look different from a romance one)
If you have some sort of idea in mind, you can state that too, so they have something to build off
A background is also helpful!

There are several art shops you can request from, and it’s fine! Many artists here in the community are extremely talented, and when asking for covers, there usually is a “form” that you’d follow, e.g. Name of story, and how you want it to look. Be specific, as it’ll definitely help the artist know what you want.

Most of the time no… I don’t think I’ve ever come across one that you have to pay for!
some people take money for commision art. which is far after all art takes time and is expensive.
