Story Review Process

No one is doubting the hard work episode has to do. People are upset because things keep on going back and forth. We were told to send our stories in for review, now we’re not? Us getting frustrated by lack of communication and clarity has nothing to do with anyone thinking the people at Episode don’t do their jobs.

It’s been 2 months almost and there are things that could have been implemented in the beginning to make the process easier. For example: reviewing their own stories before the 10th of September when the new guidelines came out so they could start the stories in the trending section earlier.

But this isn’t book writing and it’s seriously hurting smaller authors. I work for my reads. I try to release an episode a week on average, I promote on Instagram, and the forums (occasionally). It used to be that if a person got into the trending section they were there. Now, however, people might miss out on opportunities. Which isn’t fair, it simply isn’t. People work hard on stories and if they get up high enough to trend (which speaking as a romance author is not easy at all) they should be able to reap the benefits of that like everyone else has before them.

No one wants things handed to us. :joy::joy::joy:
We’re upset because it’s been back and forth for 2 months almost, the rules keep changing, so much stuff keeps on getting contradicted, and now we all have even more stuff to stress about/worry over.

Hi there!
I’m sorry but I’m a bit confused here. I’ve seen a lot of questions about how this can affect new stories but what about old stories? Stories that are completed, not in the top 100 and were already taken down (because all stories were removed from the ranks on October 10th)?

If the stories are old and completed, authors won’t be publishing them anymore, meaning, the ranks most likely won’t change that much. Does this mean they won’t get back to the ranks anymore because you only review the top 100?

I am having the same issue that many seem to be having and I am running the latest version as suggested in previous posts.

One of my stories was reviewed on October 23rd and I am still not seeing it on the ranks. I asked support about it this week and I didn’t really get an answer, I was just told that you guys are working on updating the trending section.

Since you are implementing new tools I just want to make sure stories are not falling through the cracks. Thanks for keeping us updated!

This was said about things I have seen on this thread and others where users don’t realize how much work the Episode team actually does because they can’t see it, and getting angry at how slow they are to communicate / respond with a FAQ / reply to the thread. My point was to simply say they are busy and responding on the forums is probably on their list, but not #1 importance. Have patience with them.

I don’t disagree with this. I think 100% this process could have been executed a lot better than it has been. I think they way underestimated the amount of work/time/backlash that would come from this and they were vastly under-prepared.

It is book writing, just not in the traditional sense. It is a book, but with less words, more pictures/animations, and choices. Nobody gives you a leg up when you write on any platform that I know of (unless Wattpad has changed in the last few years. I haven’t been on it in a while, when I used it you search for tags that are about what you want to read), and you start with 0 reads or exposure to get your story out there.

I know that people work hard on their stories. We all do. The point I was trying to make was that the top 100 / trending should be a reward for your hard work, not an easy way to promote your story to get more reads or exposure as a small author if your story doesn’t deserve it.

Because a small author’s story is not in the top 100 doesn’t mean it’s undiscoverable. As of today, there is still a “New User Stories” section that showcases “brand new stories from the community!” in which it says “Episode has not reviewed the content or quality of these stories.” I would like to see, going forward, them keeping this and perhaps also add it to each genre (as of now it’s only in the user stories under Stories We  )

Aside from that, I also wonder if anyone has thought of an alternate solution? What is Episode supposed to do here? Let’s think about it.

  • They have to monitor to make sure stories follow guidelines, no matter how new or old they are (to stay in line with the app store guidelines / their PG-13 rating)
  • They can’t review every single story published due to the sheer amount, but also because they’d have to keep re-reviewing every single story every time a new ep. is released
  • They can’t have inappropriate stories in the top 100
  • If someone sends a request, they have to spend their time reviewing that story

What stories would they know to review, if not basing it on how popular they are or having someone send a request? But if someone were to send a request and the story was approved, then the story never made it to the top 100 (where most readers will find a story to read) or gained popularity, they just wasted their time when they could have been reviewing stories that were already in the top 100.

Not sure if this makes sense the way I wrote it, but yeah. I get that it’s frustrating that the rules keep changing, but I would assume it’s so they can use this new system more efficiently. It’s a trial and error anytime a change is made to an app.

Also, I am a new Episode writer. So my knowledge of the app, how it used to work, and how it affects small authors is very limited. I’m fully willing to accept I may be wrong on certain points.

I just wanted to share my thoughts as a new small author because I’ve seen a lot of people say it would make small authors quit. I said I personally wasn’t mad at the situation because I’m not afraid of the challenge. It just means I’ll have to work harder to get my story noticed. I’m not going to quit or stop writing on Episode because writing, coding, and gaming are things I immensely enjoy doing. :relaxed:

Very true. We were also given the 30 day deadline to make changes and submit stories for review, which a lot of us worked extremely hard to meet.

I was working on my story during this, so I didn’t have any to go back over, but after writing so much I know how complicated it all is and I can’t imagine having dozens and dozens of episodes to go over. :grimacing:

Ah so it happened at both a convenient and inconvenient time for you

I only had 69 episodes (I say only bc I know there are tons of other authors with more haha) but I worked so hard to get them done ASAP in hopes to get my review back quickly. I got the review for one and not the other even though they were submitted at the same time… if I knew it was gonna drag out like this, I likely wouldn’t have stressed myself out to get both done so quickly :weary:

@Liz
Unfortunately, even though I am perfectly able to read what you wrote, I still am not sure about the process for new stories. Hence my question to you. I know, some community members have tried to answer them by repeating your words but that does not really help. I would prefer some clarification from your side, as speculation only ever leads to more confusion.

Could you please get back to me about this?

watch all these nasty stories get exposed

You make a good point here. I agree with you. As you said, small authors have always struggled in this community, and that is because their stories aren’t shown on any of the genre shelves. They struggle to get to the top, and it’s been like that for a long time. Unfortunately, this makes some small authors want to give up and stop writing because their stories aren’t even making it onto the genre shelves. I have a huge problem with that because I think this isn’t fair to small authors.

I don’t understand this new story review process because this puts authors in a loosing situation and at a disadvantage to some degree.

The problem which you probably do not see is that majority of readers are just common users of the app who are not on forum and thax do not fallow episode instagram. So the majority of users will never know there is a story if it will be invisible on the app.

Also geting reads on app was the best advertisment (before the change)… Typical is that after you publish new chapters the fans jump on it and read it… That automaticly pumps your rank up and the higher it is the more likely new readers will try it. So if you write good with every chapter you naturaly get more reads. And this is now not possible because the story is invisible. I see it on my story… I used to make minimally 150-200new reads per day just because the story was seen on app. Now i get 10-20 despite of the fact that I am now more promoting it on the forum.

Simply said no advertisment can replace the selfadvertising efect of story being seen on app by all readers.

Yeah. I actually believe this must be causing problems also to episode regarding income… Thay got money from every advert… So from every read…regardles it it is original or comunity story. And now due to invisibility of most stories the overall reads and also the income must have fallen down.

And because money runn the world I kinda hope that the lost income will motivate them to make the app run more or less the same as before.

I agree. This has to be a loosing situation for them because they’re not going to be taking in a lot of revenue as they were before. Maybe them loosing revenue and income will spark something in their hearts and inspire them to make some changes within the platform.

It really depends on the genre. A genre with less stories (action, fantasy, etc.) would allow for even smaller authors to appear. A genre with more stories like romance and drama was always more difficult. However, that could be fixed with more genres and the allowance of sub-genres, or a way to categorize your story with more than one genre label.

I’m half expecting authors to just start categorising their story as horror. It’s relatively “easy” to hit top 100 in that genre, then they can get their stories reviewed and trend normally

Not looking forward to having to scroll past 100+ “Hot Billionaire Baby Daddy Bad Boy” stories to find real horror stories though lol

Hmm interesting. I Might have to do this to speed up the process of things

Oh, goodness. It’s hard enough to find good horror as it is. I hope people don’t take advantage of genre-hopping to mess with the ranking metric, buuuut that happens a lot already, and I don’t think the story review process would necessarily do anything to alleviate that. :grimacing:
