In my (humble) opinion, customization is not necessary – if the story is heavily plot centred around the character. If there’s a reason there’s no customization, I respect that and it definitely will not stop me from reading! I often keep the characters the same as the author intended if customization is offered. The only time I will customize is if I know the story is very driven by your choices and is a “you” insert – like The Infected (that’s a perfect example of a story where I feel customization is necessary). That being said, if I open a story and the MC looks like a cartoon character (as in their features, eye colour, and hair type do not match) – I will either choose to exit the story, as this is a red flag to me, or I will definitely customise.
