I’ve had them too for +/- 2 years and they were so painful 
The moment when your tongue gets stuck between your braces, the cuts, not being able to chew…
At first I had to wear an Orthodontic Headgear ? (I’m not sure if that’s the right word for it in English), for 8 hours, however, I couldn’t stand the pain when sleeping with it at night and I was just too embarrassed to wear it during school so I didn’t wear them at all.
When I had normal braces, I also didn’t wear the elastics (?) as I was supposed to.
My orthodontist told me that if I won’t follow their instructions, they wouldn’t treat me and from that moment on, I actually wore them.
Yeah, the pain can sometimes be unbearable but the result is totally worth it.
My teeth were sticking out in all directions. I was extremely aware of it and wouldn’t smile for pictures, I covered my mouth when laughing. Summarized, it was tragic. Getting braces has definitely boosted my confidence.

Just to clarify, I already had braces and I’m supposed to wear retainers every other night.

Same… except retainers can be just as painful as braces, so I sometimes “accidentally” forget to wear them.

Let me ask the same question again, as in some countries 2019 has already arrived, while others are closely waiting for its arrival.
