Just use the phonetext format
Watch this video by Joseph Evans, it really helps.
That way you don’t have to make overlays, you can just write the messages and the bubbles appear.

No you can’t, unfortunately. You need to use a specific type of background or make yours fit the right proportions. If you want, in the video I referred, there is a background available that fits perfectly the format. You can download it and perhaps edit it to add the phone wallpaper I see you have on the image.
