“Well you’re just a ray of sunshine, aren’t you? But why did Cyclops hire you? I thought we had enough guards? And we should probably move because that one prisoner girl could hear our conversation. She’s either has really good ears or we’re too loud.”
I looked in the direction of the guards. I couldn’t hear what they were saying but I saw their angry expression. I made eye contact with the new on and quickly looked down. She gave me a deathly glare that even Maci could never muster. So that’s why the cyclops hired her
“Another guard?” she asked, also eyeing the new one. “Is anyone else as concerned as I am about this?”
“I’m definitely concerned” I say “I think the Cyclops brought her here to scare or intimidate us. Also to remind us that this is not just a game…”
“Yeah… But it’s also a reminder that we have to escape. And we have to escape soon. This plan has to work. God knows we don’t have a Plan B.”
She just blinked at him, glaring. She refused to answer any of his questions and went back to being silent.
The moment you all have been waiting for! The next trial! This next trial will test your mental capacity so rest up! Guards, after you escort the prisoners back to their cells, come to my office… we need to chat. Prisoners: I suggest you rest up and prepare yourselves!
I grab Keano and Ryleigh. I drag them back to their cells. I lock them up and head to the bosses office. I smile as I’m the first one there.
“So boss what did you want? Where are the rest of the guards?” She said as she hopped up and sat on his desk like she always does.
Her heartbeat quickened as soon as she heard the announcement. Oh God, not again… She was thrown into her cell by Maci. She stood near the edge, clutching the bars. What’s going to happen this time?
He heard the announcement and got slightly worried, but he hid it. “Yay, another challenge. You ready Jace?” He just hoped Cyclops wouldn’t make the guards choose again.
“Ah yes Maci… on time as always” I say as the other guards file in. “I brought you all here to address the next trial. This second trial will test the mental capacity of the prisoners since the last trial tested their strength. The amulets will put tragic and maddening false memories into their heads. This is a test to see who doesn’t crack under the burden of a disastrous past” I say.
“You may be wondering why I’m warning you. These false memories may include you all so I recommend you prepare yourselves for the reactions of the prisoners”
“Thanks for the heads up boss. I’m ready.” She smiles at him. She looks to Jace and Austin to see their reactions. She sees the new guard to. “I’m Maci. I don’t think we have met.”
He keeps his face emotionless, but it scared him.
“ Why are we wearing these amulets? “ He asks, keeping his gaze straight at Cyclops.
“Yeah,” he said. “Are we playing this game too?” He was relieved at the challenge; watching all of them fail physically was embarrassing. But this? He could handle that.
“Security purposes” I say with a smile “I can’t have my trusted guards forget that the rules apply to them as well” I grin.
“Well that ends the meeting have fun doing whatever you guys do in your free time and stay if you have any questions”
My head was slammed into the bars and the guard rushed off saying she had a meeting to attend. It was the new girl. She didn’t seem as load and obnoxious as the other guards, but cold and quiet in her own creepy way. She rushed off and I laid on my cot and stared at the moldy ceiling.
At this point they hadn’t given us any new clothes or a period to groom ourselves and I was starting to feel gross. After I’m pretty sure the guards have left, I call out to the other prisoners
“I’m here,” she said shakily. “What do you think is the next challenge?”
“I have honestly no clue” I sigh shakily “I don’t know what other possible things that sick madman could think up.”
“I’m usually here in my free time.” She giggled. “However I know you have work to do.” She smiled as she slid off the desk. She turned and smiled as she walked out the door.
