There are actually a lot of theories that Athena did this to protect them. She couldn’t punish Poseidon, a fellow God and one of the big 3, but she obviously wanted to stop them (as in the sisters) having to suffer further. Men couldn’t near her, for they would be turned to stone, and paired with taking away her beauty it was a perfect cover up. Athena could easily convince others in the misogynistic Ancient Greek society that she was punishing Medusa, but it was actually a blessing in disguise (very literally). Her snakes actually represented rebirth and the natural cycle of life, and she was said to have wings to show her freedom. Medusa’s head also symbolised feminism and she was believed to protect women. Of course, this could all be utter bullshit and she could have been forced to suffer for the actions of Poseidon. It’s inspiring or disgusting, depending on how you understand the story. Sorry for going off on one, I probably repeated the same points a lot; I’m just very passionate about Medusa. I actually agree with your point completely.
Anyway, to answer the actual question, I love stories on Greek Mythology. I don’t think they should be too true to life, but as long as the Gods that were dickheads are shown to be dickheads, it’s all good. But if I see any more stories with the ‘Artemis’s daughter’ I will flip a table.
