Tips for High School? 🙃

No prob :sparkles: Another thing is if a teacher offers easy extra credit just take it even if you have an A. That could help if you mess up on an assignment or if you’re too lazy to do one.

Oh gosh, I’m feeling old at the age of 17. It was almost 6 years ago that I started high school and now I am in my first year of college :pensive:

First of all, congratulations! You’ll start a new, exciting chapter in your life towards your future goal :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

  • The most important thing of all is; BE YOURSELF! Of course you are nervous, it’s a whole other life. Everybody is nervous, so you are definitely not the only one. Grab your courage and just go talk to classmates who seem nice! Everyone is searching for new friends
  • Go to your classes, make your homework and learn for your tests. If you are already being a rebel in the first year, there’s a great chance the teachers (and maybe even some classmates) will not take you seriously anymore and think about the effects for the next years!
  • Don’t be afraid to seek help if you do not understand anything.
  • It’s okay if it sometimes is too much for you. I knew a sweet girl who was also in her first year and she was stressed out, because EVERYTHING had to be perfect. It doesn’t have to be perfect for the first time and it’s okay if it too much for you to handle. Go talk with your loved ones and teachers about it. I’m sure they will help you! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
  • You’ll be in highschool. You’ll be (young) adults. We all know they do stuff that not always is the best choice. Don’t do anything you don’t want to do!
  • HAVE FUN!

I wish you the best of luck, you can do it :purple_heart:

Yes, I started high school at the age of 11 haha and I started college at 16. (I think that’s how you call it, I live in the Netherlands).

I skipped a grade (I believe you call it the first grade? Again, the Netherlands is weird :joy:), because I learned myself reading and I could already write, so it had nothing left for me to offer.

Grades are important, but don’t kill yourself over them! Balancing your social life and academics evenly is super important, and don’t sacrifice things like mental health and self care. It’s really not worth the long-term effects it could cause.

Take clubs and do volunteer work. If you’re applying to a competitive college, you will 100% thank yourself later. But, if you need a break, you need to take one.

Sometimes I wish I took more clubs and entered in more competition, but I don’t think I could’ve handled everything at once. Mental health is also important.

From my experience it’s better than public school, from k-8 (basically 10 years) I was bullied relentlessly but in high school it stopped. I mean there were a few incidents but overall the experience is way better than public/middle school. In high school, I was the loner of the school and it felt nice not having anyone bother me :joy: there is no recess which means no hour of walking in the boiling heat, overthinking :star_struck: I think you will like it better than public/middle school as people are a bit more mature, care more about education and the older students can also help you out if you have a question (ex. if they’re part of orientation crew) there are more clubs to join, more memories to make, and etc. I remember I was so nervous and shy but if someone like me can do it, I know you can too :yay: Stay safe and don’t do any drugs. Avoid parties (imo). If you’re ever faced with peer pressure (hopefully never), ALWAYS SAY NO. Any thing that happens to you can change the course of your history. And for someone like me who grew up internet-less, high school has computers you can use in the library for school work whereareas in public school, had to swing it :joy:

of course every experience will be different depending on what type of school you go to but note that so many people went to high school and graduated just fine  Good luck :fist_bump: :four_leaf_clover:

Oh, and if you’re going to drink/do drugs (most people from what I’ve seen do try it), do it responsibly and safely. Your first time shouldn’t be at a party.

Don’t take Geography (unless you’re really into learning about landforms and water bodies)

I know it sounds weird but it’s true.

It’s the most boring class ever and I wish I didn’t sign up for it to begin with.

Aside from that, take notes, pay attention, keep in contact with your teachers, and ask questions when you need to. :sparkles::black_heart::sparkles:

Mind your own business and you’ll be fine. The years will go by so fast and before you know it you’ll be at your graduation crying tears of joy because it’s finally over.

Actually my World Geography(a required class) the first semester of my first highschool year this year was not bad. The end of it got pretty interesting. We learned about some religions and languages too.

That’s lucky. I just have to learn about landforms and water bodies around the world because a semester long class is smushed into a quarter because of Covid so we can’t do everything we’d usually do. :pensive:

Everyone already gave good tips, so I’ll just put two down below. Don’t expect high school to be super easy. Certain classes may be easier than others, yes, but there are going to be classes that are a bit harder, at least. Those classes won’t be like middle school, you’ll have to put more effort into learning specific things. I learned this freshmen year, when I wasn’t prepared for the difficulties in my biology and geometry classes (I ended up doing well in both because I stayed after with the teachers when I had to, and I studied the material at home).

In addition, DO NOT PLAGIARIZE/CHEAT IF YOU TAKE AP COURSES. First of all, AP means that the course is college-level, so if you would plagiarize anything in college then you can get kicked out of the class or the college for it, so just don’t do it in your AP course(s) as well. Second of all, cheating on AP tests could result in getting a 0 as a grade or worse, and if you would get caught cheating on the AP exam then it will get cancelled (you won’t get a grade for it, so no college credit), and it may even lead to you never being able to take any other AP exams. Third of all, even if you would think that you’re very sneaky and would never get caught, you wouldn’t have time to cheat anyway. Tests are timed, and you will need all the time you can get. :^)

Disclaimer: I am not assuming that you would cheat or plagiarize, I’m just putting it out there just in case. It can be very tempting at times, so trust me, it isn’t worth it.

I don’t know about anyone else but it’s good to have some sort of relationship with your teachers you need to be comfortable around them (you might have your ups and downs with them and that’s okay). Also even if you REALLY don’t want to do it, do your homework cuz you’ll get behind fast. NEVER wait last minute, take it from the person who has been procrastinating since third grade, it’s not a good road. Trust me doing 26 assignments in one day ain’t it (yes it can get that high and even higher). And ALWAYS do your classwork in class, stay on task because the majority of the homework is classwork you didn’t do :pensive:

-the only good thing about procrastinating is once you do all your work in one go…you basically just studied for your test and the information just sticks. It’s probably the only reason I pass my test with A’s without “studying” lol, DON’T DO IT THO it’s not worth it and it causes a lot of stress :+1:t5:
