Tips for writing a Character with PTSD

So I’m writing a story and the MC grew up with an abusive father which will obviously give her some trauma and PTSD. So does anyone here have any tips on how I can make it realistic? Thanks.

Here are some traits that victims of abuse may have. Ofc it doesn’t apply to everyone.

  • Flinching
  • Anxiety
  • Trust issues
  • Disliking towards people that remind them of the abuser
  • Low Self Esteem
  • Depression

But please do your own research to avoid misrepresenting PTSD and connected issues

Ok thank you

I’m not the best at writing characters with a PTSD background, so I would say that research is highly recommended so there is no misinterpretation and no romanticizing.

However, I also recommend like what @Martini_98 said above, most abuse victims/people with PTSD do have trust issues and a hard time opening up to those around them. I would also say that they have common flashbacks or react to reminders of the traumatic incident(s) (in this case, an abusive relative), along with sweating, trembling, panick attacks, and intrusive thoughts/images in their head.
