Tried descriptions before customizations?

Do you guys like having a description of the characters before you customize? Also, do you only care for customizing the MC and LI or the MC, LI, and family?

I rlly need feedback. Anything helps

Ngl I think most people ignore the descriptions before CC, but if you want to add that - go ahead. Personally though, I think it’s an absolute MUST so that the readers know who they’re customizing. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve wished an author added little notes of who I’m customizing since I’ve customized a non-LI with LI deets and vice versa because I did not know who I was CCing. I don’t really care for CCing family members unless their lip color or something no longer matches their complexion based on the CCed MC so if you want to add the option to CC family — I’d recommend limited CC where readers can just correct them with colors and your family members for MC will still look somewhat like you envisioned. I’d also suggest CC for the LI if you only have one LI, since more often than not readers with have their own favorite appearance for a LI. If you have more than one, I think it’d be pretty safe to cut out CC for the 2+ LIs since it’s likely they’ll have 2+ LIs of varying appearances and personalities anyway that they can choose from. Of course, if people ask to CC them — it’s up to you. (:

I would say that it’s completely up to you. I doubt the reader would mind too much if you do or don’t. Personally, I don’t have descriptions of characters beforehand, but go for it it you want to. About the customising, I have specific features change depending on what the readers character looks like. You don’t have to give the option to customise family members, but you will probably get people asking for it if you leave the fanmail on.

For me, I only like customizing MC and LI, and I hate having to customize family members. It just takes forever and I really don’t care how they look.

I find it really helpful to have some kind of brief description of who the person is and any personality traits or back-story details that might affect/be affected by what they look like. For example, “This is your main love interest - he’s the strong, silent type and comes from a working-class family.” (Maybe it’s just me but there are some hairstyles I can only see on rich people!)

And if you limit any customization options, it’s helpful to say why. I remember one story only let me choose certain weird hair colors and never said why and then the hair color never seemed to play any role in the story and I was just going “WHYYYY did I have to use this dumb color?” the whole time. I think it was to match the art scenes, which frankly I don’t care about so I wished they had just put a warning that if you don’t choose X hair/skin colors it won’t match the art. Cause then I could decide if that matters to me or not.
