Using traditional clothing in fantasy/sci-fi stories

With the lack of fantasy and science fiction clothes, some authors use traditional clothing for the costumes of their made-up characters.

My question would be, is it okay to use traditional clothing for this? Or am I just overthinking?

I’ve seen this in a lot of stories. Sometimes it works, other times I think it’s a bit offensive and could think of other clothes that would work better. So I think it’s a case by case judgement call
