What I’ve seen some amazing authors do is have an option to put any important sounds in readerMessages for anyone with hearing troubles. For most stories, sound only has a tiny effect, but for some horror or thriller, sound can add an extra dimension, and for people like me, the readerMessages were a nice touch. 
Like 99% of the time, though, I can infer what’s going on in a story with sound that I read muted, though, so it’s not a huge deal to me either way.
I’m not hard of hearing, I just have sound-triggered migraines. If I have 10 minutes of sound-tolerance left in the day before my skull starts trying to kill me, I’m gonna spend it listening to my favourite songs, not Episode’s dinky 3-bar tunes.
