As far as I remember from the hp books dumbledore said it was because tom didn’t want to be recognized as Tom riddle because Tom was a very common name, so he used dark magic to change his face (ofc anything is possible w magic) so that everyone will be thinking that voldemort just popped out of air, which is pretty smart actually imo, I mean as a a teenager, I would die to erase my past self and act as if I just popped out of thin air
