In my story the mc and li live in New York City, New York and they run away from there wedding. So should they live in New York still but in a different city or a different state? If state where would be some cool places.

They could move upstate, to the finger lakes region. It’s a realistic place for someone already living in NY state to go to, but it’s far enough from the city that they can get away from it all. It’s a pretty area, so it would give you a lot to work from with setting scenes at vineyards, waterfalls, lakes, cabins, and picturesque small towns. You can set it in a real town, or you could create a fictional town in the real region that has all the things you want it to have.

Don’t take the US. Think further.
Think the Carribean or Mexico or Canada or even South America. At least roughly this continent.
