OK. And I oop. I don’t want to take away from you or anybody here. I hope it was more so unintentional than malicious
(But colonization was mentioned, so I referenced an example of literal colonization. I can be like that sometimes. Sorry.)
Although I do think that a majority of white people do not have round pouty lips, I think the feature is used on white characters more because it has more to do with beauty standards and the author’s unconscious bias. They tend to want to make the MC stand out more and attractive, and with current trends that praise people with fuller lips, they would go for fuller lips. The author probably doesn’t want to make the character look like the majority, which I understand because let’s face it, we want to make our MC’s special in some way, whether it’s appearance or personality. Another reason is probably just how the author envisioned the character. But I highly doubt that the author means to use it in a disrespectful way.
I think that white MC’s having thin lips should be used more often in stories and normalized, but it’s not something worth attacking or calling out an author over unless they’re doing it to mock/disrespect, being plain racist or using it for literally every character because that’s not diversity or representation
Colonization can take on many forms. The one being spoken about right now is more based in pattern: White people take, steal, and appropriate things from BIPOC. BIPOC people have every right to be angry and express that anger over stuff like this. They’ve been dealing with this for their entire life and their ancestors have suffered greatly as well.
Also a small piece of advice: your post felt a bit like tone-policing. So, just be cautious of that in the future.
OK. I don’t want to express my opinions at the expense of others.
I’m not saying to not express your opinions. But make sure you’re doing some self reflection before replying to topics like these. White fragility can cloud your mind (I even struggle with this) and it’s important to try and approach everything with an open mind rather than getting hurt immediately and tone policing. I’m not trying to be rude here, I’m really trying to help you.
I’m sorry that I said something implying your points were equivalent to colonization–because they’re not. The colonization was meant to serve as a contrast. It was in bad taste, and I apologize. I do think that using cultural features in a mocking way is very wrong, and I hadn’t addressed the beauty standards. I understand the frustration behind large lips being portrayed as “fake,” especially since they are (beautiful!) natural features that are perpetuated as “ugly” when used on the mean girl.
And mentioning the history of beauty standards is relevant, as well as valid.
What I was getting at was that they were being more crass, as you said.
I’m going to be quiet now so I don’t accidentally say more stupid things.
I never said they were following what other authors were doing…
A few white characters w this feature is acceptable. But, the majority of characters w full lips should b black ppl. All races have different features, sum r seen as ‘stunning’ and others r seen as ‘ugly’. Authors wanna create a perfect mc, so they give her all the features the beauty industry likes… full lips, button nose, long hair that’s curly. That’s what they think looks beautiful bc they basically wanna create a model or whatever. The muse is always a model with loads of lip liner. It’s sad, ngl.
I think ppl should try think of the origin of the lips, how does she have this feature? It’s also dumb of authors to remake themselves w huge lips, u don’t need to, but ppl wanna create a new version of themselves on episode… taller, slimmer, more pretty. Idek y they do it. (Remade my post cuz I deleted it by accident
)
Alsooo that look up there ^ is usually the mean girl. And obviously I’m the story her lips r fake. then mc is 03 w full lips and she real
I– preach my girl ![]()
THIS IS WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT WHEN I MENTIONED THE MEDIA ![]()

Admittedly, I can’t speak about the “mean girl” issue being presented in this thread, but I have thought about this in my spare time.
If we’re talking about the issue as a whole then, yeah, I think it has mostly to do with beauty trends. If you go back 20 years to the early 2000s, you’ll see a lot of pale, thin-lipped, flat-backed white women because that’s what was considered beautiful at the time. Which isn’t to say white people couldn’t (or didn’t, moreso) have full lips, just that that wasn’t what was being idealized. And even at that, their natural full lips looked nothing like the image pictured.
Today, there’s been an obvious shift. Afrocentric features such as curly-coily hair, big lips, and fuller figures have become desirable to masses. But but but—there’s still lingering threads of white supremacy in the mix. That causes people to want to attain some sort of ambiguous mix. People want the thick lips but not the noses, the curly hair but not the dark skin. That’s kinda where I think we are today, masking the commodification of black features as acceptance of them.
But also, lolololol, I don’t really care because at the end of the day I’m not reading a high school drama so I’m not even these author’s target demographic
