You could do it in many way but it depends on the story, I think having an intro first before creating the characters will look more professional but I prefer if the intro doesn’t have the original characters showing or it ruins it for me since I have to see the future as someone else basically just for me to customise them and them look totally different. Whatever works for you because I don’t mind.
