I think anyone who’s interested in crime would want to read something like that. I think a potential issue, however, would be depicting them as one-dimensional characters, as no criminal (or any other person) is a one-dimensional being. Yes, they are and should be depicted as the bad guys, but nothing is ever so black and white.

I like the idea someone shot off about the MC being an undercover cop and would 100% read that.

I actually started a story similar to this a while back and never finished it. Set it during prohibition and based it on the mafia in a historical sense because I got so frustrated with people depicting the mafia in such a clearly un-researched way.

There are videos on BuzzFeedVideo on youtube about an ex mob boss and he educates on his old lifestyle. You can watch them they are very interesting and finding documentaries on crime. It might help you make your character a realistic criminal but as @/lostintranslation said making them also human at the same time will be important.

I would just recommend writing them like any other character. Really doing research and such. I mean I grew up in a law office so have quite a bit of firsthand experience interacting with criminals. Obviously, no two people are alike.

My story follows an MC who’s a criminal, and I think that part of the fun in writing it is making it so that the reader feels sympathy for the MC, but really he’s an irredeemable psychopath.

Yeah, I’m currently binge watching the BuzzFeedVideo’s on youtube about an ex mob boss (as recommended by @bakedpotato)and have been for the past hour :sweat_smile: I’m taking notes as I watch and currently have 1 and 3/4 of an A4 page typed up full of notes from the videos (:

Okay hear me out :sob: So basically the MC is undercover and gets close to the mafia boss meanwhile the mafia boss has a computer geek brother who doesn’t want to be apart of the mafia business so he starts helping the MC take down the mafia boss while slowly falling in love or becoming good friends (readers choice based on points) they take the mafia boss down and he ends up in jail with the rest of his crew and the undercover cop gets a promotion in her job and the brother joins the police force with her. Lol this is just an idea I thought of seeing this :joy:

It could work, but I’m trying to keep romance completely away from the mafia and it’s members (:

The mc has a partner in the police force who will help with the infiltration but if that ends in a romance, it still won’t be a main topic in any way, shape or form (:

I’m assuming there story names (I’ve not read them :sweat_smile:) but solely based off of the titles…I’d guess this is more like breaking bad since in this story…there may be a few corrupt officers trying to get in the MC’s way :eyes: Who knows :wink:

oh no those are tv shows haha. breaking bad is about a suburban dad who is a chemistry teacher who winds up making drugs and law and order is a casual daytime cops&robbers kind of melodrama haha.
