I was wondering about a few things and I would love to hear your opinions or experience.
What will make you not want to continue reading a story? (Eg. if you see that the plot started becoming predictable, or it’s becoming cliche, or the author stopped proofreading the chapters…)
What do you consider a bad ending? (Eg. if the mc dies, or if the couple doesn’t end up together, or open endings…)
If the author misrepresents someone, would you message them to inform about their mistake, would you report the story, would you continue reading…?
Is there something on a story that would make you bored? (eg. irrelevant conversations, repetitive themes…)
5) Is there something that can drag your attention even if the plot is “not your type of story”?
6) What do you find interesting?
7) Any tip that you want to share?
You don’t have to answer to all of these questions if you don’t want, even if you answer to one of them it helps. Thank you.
When there is no character development whatsoever. It doesn’t need to go too fast, but no development makes it so the character is a little plain (if that makes sense). Sometimes when I feel like the author doesn’t have the motivation to write and they just speed it up by 5 times, then there is also a chance I would stop reading.
An unrealistic one, or an ending that just straight up disappoints you, like a story has been leading up to one big moment, and it isn’t as spectacular as it should’ve been.
If I know enough about that one thing that misrepresent, I will send them a message. If I don’t know enough about it I’ll still send a message, but without a lot of information since I don’t want to be wrong myself. I would tell them to educate themselves more on the topic.
Yes, time fillers that are obviously time fillers, for example a character singing in the shower for no reason, why does the reader need to see that?
Good directing, good story telling… At first I probably won’t even click on it if the cover and description don’t make me curious.
Creative idea’s. Stories that aren’t too cliche. Make something that you don’t see a lot.
Make sure to direct the story right.
Don’t make a lot of spelling/grammar mistakes.
Make the characters have good development.
Make side characters interesting, don’t make them just a filler for the MC, make them have an interesting past, make them sequel worthy (don’t have to make a sequel), but make them still have their own life.
If you have more questions you might find some answers in a thread I made. It honestly helped me a lot when I had to come up with my story and all:) here is the link.
What will make you not want to continue reading a story? Annoying MC, too slow plot (for example, too much filler scenes)
What do you consider a bad ending? rushed endings/random endings, deus ex machina. I love a sad ending.
If the author misrepresents someone , would you message them to inform about their mistake, would you report the story, would you continue reading…?
Depends on situation. It’s very unlikely that I’ll report it.
Is there something on a story that would make you bored? too much filler; too much time without scene change, boring directing.
Is there something that can drag your attention even if the plot is “not your type of story”? amazing directing/interactivity/unique plot
What do you find interesting? honestly, I don’t know
I couldn’t agree more. Who is reading the lyrics anyway?! I see that character development is very important, sometimes if the character doesn’t develop the story itself feels like it doesn’t develop. Thank you for the comment, it is really helpful and I am going to read your post right away.
What will make you not want to continue reading a story?
For me it is in general bad writing - so if the story is boring or too rich, the characters are flat or their behavior makes no sense to me… I don’t mind cliche if the writing itself is good - I mean Episode is full of cliches.
What do you consider a bad ending?
Well bad ending of me is in general ending that I was not hoping for and that makes me feel sad - it doesn’t need to be drastic, like someones dead, it can be also that the one I hoping they will be together will simply not be together at the end.
The open ending is not a bad ending since it leaves the option for both.
But to be honest I heavily prefer good endings.
If the author misrepresents someone ,
I would most likely not do any of it unless it would misrepresent something that directly touches me - then I would DM the author.
Is there something on a story that would make you bored?
Oh yeah, many things… I was making several reviews and tbh half of the stories were boring for me - its related to the “good writing” thing - it’s not just one thing but the general feeling from how the story is written so it’s hard to tell…don’t do this and it will not be boring…
Is there something that can drag your attention even if the plot is “not your type of story”?
well it depends - for example, my disgust with mafia stories is so big that there is nothing that could change my mind and read one more even if it would be the top of the top stories with millions of reads. Any other theme probably yes if it is written lovely and grags me in.
6) What do you find interesting?
Well anything unpredictable, I guess,?
Firstly i wanna say that i really don’t mean to offend anyone, this is my opinion and you may agree or disagree with it.
I would say, really bad grammar and spelling, now i know not everyone’s first language is english and i totally understand that! But if it came to the point where it’s unreadable then that’s a problem to me:(
A lot of directing mistakes.
Bland dialogues.
Long narrations describing the characters personality, i prefer the author to show not tell!
A rushed one, like a sudden ending where there’s still a lot of stuff unsolved and doesn’t make sense!
If it happened once, firstly i would contact the author nicely and tell them that, and most probably continue reading, i won’t judge on the first mistake! But if it’s getting too consistent, then i would stop reading ngl.
Long intros, especially if the previous chapter ended in a cliffhanger, as you said irrelevant dialogues and a predictable scene, for example the club scene where the MC is in danger then the LI will save her.
Advanced directing and an interesting plot really catches my eyes! I would just say oh lala this author knows their way into writing a story yk? sjkdhjs
A unique plot, interesting characters with remarkable personalities and that i can relate to, funny jokes/memes, mini games!
I actually just posted a thread with tips for authors!!
Here’s the link!
Uuuuh the way of writing! There are authors that you can just recognise if a stories is their by the way of writing. It can be good or bad, maybe it depends on the reader’s taste.
that’s true… I’ve been a reviewer too and I can totally understand it. I just hope for my story that it’s in the “good side of writing”
Thank you for your kind words. I have watched many videos of writing and read many posts, I still trying to learn as many things as I can, that’s why I am asking all of those. But I feel like i am a strict reviewer and people are offended because I prefer to point out the things that i found “bad” rather than good (they are the ones that need to be corrected anyway). Sometimes in my stories, I don’t know if there is a plot hole (because everything is clear in my mind), and IDK if there is something that the reader didn’t understand. Also, usually, reviewers review the first 3 chapters so I have no idea if the other chapters that I wrote are bad. I am trying by those posts to see if my story is interesting or how to make it more interesting.
If you need any help, feel free to PM me! And constructive criticism is really helpful, some people take it the wrong way and that’s why they feel offended. Reading posts on the forums can be really helpful but you can’t always satisfy all the readers, keep that in mind!
I didnt ment specific writing style - more simply good writing in general - but iff you have done reviews you know what I mean.
Only problem is that if anybody is new to writing he is not able to see usually if what he wrote works or not. Some are gifted and it works practicly from the first line while others simply have to first learn how writing works. So in any case taking feedback is good - I personaly recomand to go for the honest one since the sweet supportive is nice but if the people will not be honest with you and do not tell you they got bored or simply not impressed by the story you can hardly learn anything - but on the other hand go for criticism only if you are really ready for it.
SO TRUE! I’ve been through this phase too, my friends told me (at my very first story) my mistakes but I couldn’t see them as mistakes bc I was way too excited. Then I publish it and saw that I could barely get 1 read I started begging for criticism and stop being so excited… I am trying to find a good reviewer but is so hard to find an honest one. Once I got a review it was so good that I started being suspicious… I read that reviewer’s other reviews and it was a copy-paste… that reviewer didn’t even read my story…
if writing and directing works another iportant things you need to attract the readers
good cover - I know nobody want to pay for art when you write your first ever story - but from my experiens its significant how it efect reads - especially after you succed to get your story visible on the app - the readers who do not come from the comunity and simply just read stories are definitly clicking more on good quality cover and if you have romance in story- its always better to have couple there - sad I know but true.
Ad for havens sake do not go for the kids art - bad art is big turn of - so in this case is better to use edits with characters than bad art …I dont want to give examples to not hurt some artist - but if the cover looks like kid has drawn it it will simply not serve you well
description - if you suceed to atract reader on your cover next is the description - make it clear and attractive - cliches and a bit of excagirating works surprisingly well
first chapter - rememer this one is for free and its content makes reader decide if he want to spend passes on next one. So 1 chapters should be one of the best you have…NEVER start your story with intro saying things like I am new to writing so bear with me the story will get better in time…its like if you say that you yourself know its not good…and its big turn of.
Take care that there is some moment of suspencion some life change or some clifhanger - something that makes reader carve for more. If you will make it just like an introduction of character reader will more likley just abandon it.
So 1 chapter is more important than many authors think.
ah that’s really stupid… well I can give you an honest opinion - I am not sugarcoating anything.
I aim mainly at 1 chapter since this is the most important.
I usually read it 2x - first as a reader to get a general impression and second where I try to pick up any single detail that was not working for me or any directing that in my opinion needs improvement.
1-What will make you not want to continue reading a story?
-pointless scenes, poor grammar (not simple mistakes, but full sentences that don’t make sense), or if there’s no plot development.
2- What do you consider a bad ending?
-Loose ends. If the story ends without explaining plot twists or just leaves open storylines.
4- Is there something on a story that would make you bored?
-similar to #1, if there are pointless scenes. “Let’s get breakfast!” And then nothing happens to progress the story…
5- Is there something that can drag your attention even if the plot is “not your type of story”?
-good character development! Even if it’s not typically a story I would read, if I feel connected to the character and their journey, I’ll continue.
6- What do you find interesting?
-creative, unique story lines, and complex characters.
7-Any tip you want to share?
-plan out your story! Not every single scene, but give your character hurdles to overcome and plan how they’ll over come them. Give them some conflict and resolutions, and planning is the best way to make sure you do this cohesively and without leaving loose ends.
What will make you not want to continue reading a story?
Poor/bad directing, a plot that is kind of bad, a chapter that is more than 20 minutes (even if the story is super great, it’s too long for me…) And I think that’s it!
What do you consider a bad ending?
I don’t really know… Maybe an ending that doesn’t really make sense to me.
If the author misrepresents someone
I think I would message them. Maybe they don’t know they made a mistake! It’s important to let them knowand not report them right away.
Is there something on a story that would make you bored?
Too much narration, describing things too much, same animations, characters that aren’t moving (the same scene for like 10 minutes).
Is there something that can drag your attention even if the plot is “not your type of story”?
Good directing! If the story make sense to me, and if there is some humors in it, hen yes! Maybe!
What do you find interesting?
Good plot! Unique story, fantasy stories! Diversity too.
Any tip that you want to share?
If you start writing a story for the first time on Episode, well, take your time to learn coding! I’ve read many stories from beginners (as myself) and it was kinda meh… Not because the story was boring, I’m sure they had some amazing ideas! But if you don’t know how to put your story to life, just take your time to learn coding! It’s not just about coding but also about the way you are bringing your story to life to the readers. it’s very important!
