Mirror Reflection

#1

I have found a few YouTube videos showing how to do mirror reflections, but they all seem a bit too complicated for me. Does anyone mind showing me the steps in simple terms? Or if anyone could direct me to a post that is able to understand?

It’s pretty simple, really. If you don’t already have a mirror overlay, you can find one from @shellyg.episode on instagram (give her credit if you use her stuff).

So you will need:

  1. Main character
  2. A duplicate character of the main character
  3. A mirror overlay

First, add the mirror overlay to the scene.

INT. BACKGROUND NAME - DAY with MIRROR OVERLAY in zone #

For more information on how to add overlays to your scene, CLICK HERE

Second, add the main character (MC) and the duplicate (DC) to the scene.

INT. BACKGROUND NAME - DAY with MIRROR OVERLAY
@MC spot % x y in zone #
@DC spot % x y in zone #

Third, add layers!

  1. MC needs to be at the highest layer.
  2. DC needs to be at the lowest layer.
  3. The mirror overlay needs to be at a layer between MC and DC

INT. BACKGROUND NAME - DAY with MIRROR OVERLAY at layer 2
@MC spot % x y in zone # at layer 3
@DC spot % x y in zone # at layer 1

Fourth, MC needs to be facing rear and DC needs to face the MC as if they are looking at each other.

INT. BACKGROUND NAME - DAY with MIRROR OVERLAY at layer 2
@MC spot % x y in zone # at layer 3 and MC faces left and MC starts rear
@DC spot % x y in zone # at layer 1 and DC faces left and DC starts idle

Thank you so much :slight_smile:

#4

were can you find the mirror overlay I’ve been trying to find it but it doesn’t seem to be anywhere?

#5

.

#6

Thank you very much!

#7

I followed everything that you said @Dara.Amarie, but some reason my duplicate character is showing her body in the body instead of just her face. I don’t know why it’s like that.

#8

Spot place her lower

#9

I did. It still didn’t look right because her legs were still shown. So how would I spot her lower?

#10

The overlay should be the whole background and just the mirror part should be transparent. If the overlay is just the mirror, then it’s not big enough to hide the whole character’s body.

#11

Hmmmmmm…, lemme show you what I have.

INT. BATHROOM MIRROR- DAY with MIRROR to 0.588 10 304 in zone 1

@RAIN2 spot 1.021 156 120 in zone 1

@RAIN3 spot 1.021 156 120 in zone 1

INT. BATHROOM MIRROR- DAY with MIRROR to 0.588 10 304 at layer 2

@RAIN2 spot 1.021 133 124 in zone 1 at layer 3 AND RAIN2 faces left AND RAIN2 starts rear

@RAIN3 spot 1.052 185 126 in zone 1 at layer 1 AND RAIN3 faces left AND RAIN3 starts idle_sad

@zoom on 188 277 to 129% in 3

#12

What does the overlay image look like?

#13

It looks like this:

#14

Yea see that’s what I mean by the overlay cannot be just the mirror. Take this bathroom overlay for example (@shellyg.episode on instagram). The overlay image is the whole bathroom excluding the mirror part which should be transparent, so that when you put a character behind the overlay, their feet and rest of the body doesn’t show.

#15

Okay, so you want to use that bathroom background instead of the one I originally had right?

#16

You could use that background. But what I’m trying to say is that the overlay cannot be the mirror itself, but rather it should be the background with the mirror part removed.

Like how I took this image:

and turned it into this overlay by cutting out the mirror

Ohhh I see what you mean.

I’m still getting confused with the code because it’s not coming out right. Here’s how it looks:
INT. FANCY BLUE BATHROOM- DAY with MIRROR in zone 2

@cut to zone 2

INT. FANCY BLUE BATHROOM- DAY with MIRROR

@RAIN2 spot 0.958 158 204 in zone 2

@RAIN3 spot 0.958 184 200 in zone 2

INT. FANCY BLUE BATHROOM- DAY with MIRROR to 0.676 39 330 at layer 2

@RAIN2 spot 0.958 158 204 in zone 2 at layer 3 AND RAIN2 faces left AND RAIN2 starts rear

@RAIN3 spot 0.958 184 200 in zone 2 at layer 1 AND RAIN3 faces left AND RAIN3 starts idle_sad
